Do you play the guitar? If the answer is no, you can bear in mind that neither do a large number of guitarists in bands. It is a fantastic instrument. You can learn 3 or 4 simple chords in about an hour and then find out that these chords are the basis for all pop music and for much of jazz as well. By using a capo you can play in any key. More than this, your pupils can do the same and will love the experience. Guitars are available in just about any size and they are unbelievably cheap.
